We don't need Mike Huckabee

Here's a new ad from the Club for Growth offering more reasons not to elect Mike Huckabee as the Republican nominee for president.

Nominating Mike Huckabee would be an abomination for the Republican party. We do not need his brand of big-government conservative populism - from him or anyone. Rapid government growth is antithetical to the very foundation of the Republican party. Republicans over the past seven years have ignored that, and have severely damaged the party's brand. It's time for a leader who can once again articulate that government is the problem, not the solution.

Mike Huckabee doesn't believe in smaller government. State government grew 20% under his administration in Arkansas. I spent a few days in Arkansas back in 2005 conducting research on the political climate, and all the conservatives I talked to were embarrassed at what Huckabee had done to the state. That's not what we need in a president, and that's certainly not what we need representing the Republican party on the national stage.

I watched his speech last night as he accepted third place in New Hampshire, a shockingly high finish for him among the independent-minded voters there. He is charming and seems friendly, but at the end of the day he's just a snake oil salesman. We need a leader of substance, someone who can articulate a message of limited government (the way both Mitt Romney and John McCain did in their speeches last night). And that means we don't need Mike Huckabee.

I like Mike Huckabee. I'm not an evangelical bible thumper. I do believe in God.

You can not look at only a few pieces of the puzzle. You have to look at the entire big picture.

Yes taxes were raised and LOWERED in his state. Yes the net tax burden increased over 10 YEARS- but the people of Arkansas VOTED to have the gas tax increased to improve the infrastructure of their state. His STATE was under a court order to improve the schools which caused a tax increase. He did not do anything in isolation. His decisions were approved by a DEMOCRATIC legislature. I don't remember the rankings right now but when he left office the Arkansas tax burden was ranked lower then when he took office.

For the negatives you heard when you were in the state I've heard positives from the people that live there. There are always both sides of the coin.

I like Huckabee because he thinks of the people first and then the lobbyist and other politicians. He will do what is right for the PEOPLE as a whole and not just a few select groups.

You called Huckabee a snake oil salesman- funny that is the way I feel about Mitt Romney. Besides I'll take 10 years of Governor experience over 4 years any day- also, wasn't Romney out of his state the last year of his term something like 253 days? What a way to be among the people you lead.

Go Mike Huckabee- You have my vote in November!

I lived through Mike Hucakbee's tax and spend 10 years as Arkansas Governor. The interstates had been under-maintained for years because of Huck's neglect. Fuel taxes were raised by Huck to fix them--the people got to vote on the bond issue after the taxes were signed into law by Huck.

The Courts did NOT order a tax increase to fix the schools. Huck failed to address a growing problem even though he had 8 years of warning and then he raised taxes. By the way Arkansas colleges have to remediate 56% of all incoming freshman from AR high schools.

Our tax burden went from 35th in the US to 13th highest under Huck. A few AR folks made out well, but the rest of us are a lot poorer because he was governor.
